Spider Vein Removal

What is Spider Vein Removal?

Spider veins are a collection of small veins that show through the skin, usually on the legs and the nose and cheek area of the face. They are unattractive and can be a source of embarrassment. Sclerotherapy is a widely used treatment for spider veins. It involves injecting an agent into the vein, which causes inflammation within the vein and subsequent closing of the vein. Lasers, concentrated beams of light, are also used on spider veins. With a laser, strong bursts of light will travel into the vein, causing it to slowly fade from the area.

Benefits of Spider Vein Removal

Anyone with spider veins knows how embarrassing it can be to have them show when wearing certain clothing. And if they are on the face, makeup may be used to try and cover them. But it can be aggravating having to wear heavy makeup, especially in warm weather. The removal of spider veins takes care of the problem and the embarrassment that goes along with it.

Spider Vein Removal FAQ

Q: What is the recovery time of spider vein removal?

A: Recovery time from treatments will differ for each patient. With sclerotherapy, there is no downtime to worry about. If the veins that were treated were on the legs, patients will be advised to wear compression stockings for a period of time. With laser therapy, there may be some redness and slight bruising. Within one month, and this can vary from patient to patient, bruising should have completely faded away. Walking during this period of time is encouraged, and prolonged standing or sitting is discouraged.

Q: Do I need anesthesia for spider vein removal?

A: Anesthesia is not required for either sclerotherapy or laser treatment. The treatments are not of long duration and can usually be done on an outpatient basis.

Q: Is spider vein removal safe?

A: Laser therapy is a relatively safe procedure, though there may be some bruising at injection sites and some redness. With sclerotherapy, there may be allergic reactions to the agent that is injected into the veins. There is also a possibility of edema, blood clots, inflammation and scarring. Your doctor can discuss with you the possible risks and side effects.

Q: Do I need to prepare for spider vein removal?

A: There is really no preparation required for either sclerotherapy or laser removal of spider veins. Checking with the doctor about medications that are being taken may be a good idea. The day of the procedure, wear loose-fitting clothing for comfort, and make certain that the area to be treated is free of any type of lotion or other substance.

Q: How long does spider vein removal last?

A: The results of spider vein removal can last for years, if not permanently.
